Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah America, is an actress and rapper. Queen Latifah's career in music film and television has resulted in her receiving a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her parents divorced around the age of 10 years old. Latifah was a student at the Catholic school in Newark the state of New Jersey. She was also raised by her family's Baptist Church. Latifah refers to gentle and generous. The name was given by her cousin to her at the age of 8. Always a tall girl at 5'10, Latifah was a forward on her high school basketball team. The play she played in her high school Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah became a beatboxer for her band, the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was one of the founding members of the version of the Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King made an unreleased version of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah upon hearing the track. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
